Quick Lime

Quicklime is a Calcium oxide formed by calcining calcium carbonate (lime stone) so that carbon dioxide is liberated. Quicklime is also called as burnt lime, handpicked lime, calcining lime, lump lime or caustic lime. A caustic substance that is prepared by burning calcium carbonate lime stone at approximately 900 degree Celsius, at this high temperatures carbon dioxide is driven off and the lime Stone is converted to Quicklime.
A chemical compound with formula (CaO) it is a whitish, odourless alkaline substance, which does not dissolve well in water. It can be used as a lining material. Major use is in various industrial processes like metal smelting, paper bleaching, sulphur neutralization in sugar and so many.
It is used in many water and waste water treatment operations such as softening. Quicklime is created by heating limestone as shown in the following equation:
CaCO3 + HEAT = CaO + CO2
Quicklime is irritating to the eyes and skin: Wear full personnel protective equipment. (Head hood, Goggles, cotton work suit, rubber & polythene globes and leather boots) In case contact with eyes, rinse immediate with plenty of water seeks medical attention. Wash off any hydrated lime adhering to the skin with water.
Do not inhale Quicklime with dust. In case of inhalation, wash the nose & throat with water. Seek medical attention if necessary not feeling well. In the event of ingestion, do not induce vomiting. Drink copious quantities of water. Seek medical attention if feelings of discomfort persist.
In case of spillage or release, first contain the spillage. Keep the material dry. Remove material mechanically where possible. Avoid contamination of watercourses & drains. During storage, minimum contact with atmospheric moisture & other material.
